Dear
Residency Applicant,
Our residency program was established in 1979 to address
the shortage of primary care physicians in the Mid-Hudson
Region. We have done our job well, producing 150 competent
family physicians, many of whom remain in our community.
Our graduates serve as teachers and role models, including
the current Chair of the Board of Health Alliance of the
Hudson Valley, Dr.Eugene Heslin.
Ulster County has undergone a revision in the way that medical
services are provided and we play a major role in this change.
Our status as a Federally Qualified Health Center enables
us to care for the medically underserved population and
to provide a full spectrum of services for the community.
We are NCQA Level 3 and JCAHO accredited, with special recognition
for meaningful use of health information technology. Our
EPIC EMR system allows secure provider access from any location.
Point of care evidence-based medicine resources, e- prescribing
and readily available patient related information are some
of the highlights. There is a patient access portal, permitting
direct e-mail communication between patients and doctors.
This optimizes the ability of residents to meet ACGME competencies
in Patient Care, Systems Based Practice, Interpersonal &
Communication Skills and Professionalism.
Didactic opportunities abound, with a robust conference
schedule and many local, regional and national opportunities
to both learn and present current Medical Knowledge. Practice
Based Learning and Improvement is built into our team approach
to continuous quality improvement. Residents are expected
to produce high quality primary care research, leading to
better outcomes for their patients and colleagues.
You will have the chance to enter a thriving community hospital
environment. Our residents and medical students are the
focus of teaching
we are the only medical residency
program in Kingston. The ratio is one to one, with teaching
from family physicians and other specialists in all medical
disciplines. We work together as a team and feel like a
family.
Our mission is to prepare family physicians to serve as
leaders in health care, using a biopsychosocial approach
that integrates the psychological, social, economic, and
environmental influences on a person's health with biomedical
causes. Our residency program builds on the comprehensiveness
of family practice with an emphasis on the particular needs
of medically underserved communities.
We have a very diverse multicultural patient population.
We have established several outpatient programs including
pediatrics, maternity care, geriatrics, and behavioral health.
Our residents also have the opportunity to collaborate with
our sister residency program, the Beth Israel Residency
in Urban Family Practice at Beth-Israel Medical Center in
Manhattan, NY.
We welcome all prospective MD and DO applicants and students
to visit us and to explore the opportunities. We like what
we do and invite you to join us.
