AmeriCorps Community
HealthCorps Member

The Institute for Family Health’s Community HealthCorps is a national AmeriCorps program that promotes health care for the underserved while training future healthcare workers. Institute HealthCorps members engage in a variety of projects that promote access to health care and health information in medically underserved communities.

WE'RE RECRUITING!

Summer Positions (450 Hours of Service)
Positions available include:

  • Conducting community outreach and health education on preventive health topics
  • Working with the Bronx Health REACH Coalition on community-based health education activities in an effort to eliminate racial disparities in health outcomes
  • Providing health education and outreach to diabetic patients in the Mid Hudson Valley
  • Coordinating a Reach out and Read program at our Bronx clinic locations.

Benefits for summer positions:

  • Educational award ($1,125 upon completion of service)
  • Monthly Metrocard for local travel in New York City
  • Extensive opportunities for professional development

Year Long/Full Time Positions: September 2010 – August 2011
Positions available include:

  • Conducting one-on-one and group health education sessions on preventive health topics such as diabetes, nutrition, depression care, and prenatal care with patients at our health centers
  • Acting as case manager for Healthcare for the Homeless
  • Working in Health Outreach for the Bronx Health REACH/CEED program
  • Working in our School Based Health Center to provide health services and reproductive health education to high school students
  • Serving as an educator and support person for patients who attend the Institute’s Women’s Health Free Clinic
  • Acting as a Depression Care Manager for patients with mental health needs in the Bronx, Manhattan, or at the Institute’s Family Practice Center’s in Ellenville and\or Kingston, NY
  • Acting as a breast-feeding educator and advocate in our Kingston Hospital
  • Coordinating a mentor program for underserved youth

Living Allowance and Benefits:

  • Living stipend distributed biweekly(about $11,400 for 1700 hours of service – 11 months full-time)
  • Educational award ($5,350 upon completion of service)

  • Travel Benefits: Monthly metrocard or comparable mileage reimbursement for upstate members


Minimum eligibility requirements:
• United States citizen, United States national, or lawful permanent resident
• High school diploma or GED or commitment to obtain during the service year
• At least 17 years of age
• Strong commitment to service
• Respect for and interest in working in medically underserved communities
• Excellent people skills
• Ability to learn quickly
• Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Creativity and initiative
